Meet Joy Afieokor Kisser – A Voice for Children’s Mental Health at UEW (CCESAG)
“How many smiles do you think hide silent battles we’ll never see?”
This profound question lies at the heart of Joy Afieokor Kisser’s journey—a 22-year-old from Ada in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Joy is currently pursuing a degree in Early Grade Education at the University of Education, Winneba, with a passion rooted in love, empathy, and a strong desire to transform young lives.
Among her two sisters, her father affectionately calls her “the most caring,” and it’s easy to see why. Joy’s nurturing spirit and unwavering commitment to others define her character. She didn’t choose Early Childhood Education by chance—it was a purposeful decision fueled by her dedication to supporting children’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. She believes that with the right guidance, children can become powerful agents of national transformation.
A Story of Resilience
Joy’s journey to UEW was not an easy one. After her first WASSCE attempt, she didn’t obtain the grades required to continue her education. While her peers moved forward, she stayed behind—grappling with feelings of uncertainty and discouragement. But her story didn’t end there. With the steadfast support of her family, she retook the exam, passed with flying colors, and earned her place at the university.
This experience shaped her perspective deeply and sparked her passion for an issue we often overlook: mental health.
Her Project: Mental Health Awareness Among Children and Youth
Joy’s advocacy is focused on mental health awareness, especially among children and young people. She highlights how easily mental health issues are dismissed or hidden in silence, often until tragedy strikes. A recent heartbreaking incident on campus, involving a student who took his own life, reinforced her mission. The story went viral—but beneath the surface was a silent struggle with emotional pain that was never addressed.
Joy believes that mental health is health, and it must be treated with the same importance as physical well-being.
If given the platform as a winner of Mr. & Miss CCESAG 2025, she plans to:
-
Create safe spaces for open conversations around mental health
-
Organize workshops, peer support groups, and awareness campaigns
-
Collaborate with health professionals, schools, and youth organizations
-
Promote early intervention and emotional education in schools
She envisions a future where no young person feels alone in their pain, and every child has access to the emotional support they need.
Support Joy’s Mission
Help Joy bring mental health to the forefront of national conversations.
